C. Morris. HMS Argonaut.
HMS Argonaut was part of the
Task Force supporting the military landings in the Falklands, and she was
slightly damaged by the first Argentinian aircraft
(an MB339) seen by the Amphibious Force, at 08.15. At 13.15
when close to Fanning Head, she was suddenly attacked
by 6 Skyhawks who straddled the ship with exploding
bombs. Another 1000 lb. Bomb, which did not explode,
pierced the ships magazine causing a huge fire which
swept through the ship, while a second bomb which lodged
between the engine and boiler rooms disabled the ship’s
power and steering gear, crippling the frigate and
killing two crew members. Rank has been erased from medal.
