1836-1936. Bronze Medal 1¼” diameter. The reverse has an
embossed picture of
HMS “Buffalo” on it. HMS “Buffalo” was a British Navy Convict Ship
employed in carrying convicts and cargo
from England to Australia. On 25th July 1840 the vessel sailed from
Mercury Bay, New Zealand. The weather was
bad, and by July 28th the “Buffalo” was experiencing the full force of
the gale and was blown ashore near
Whitlanga, North Island, and wrecked with the loss of two lives. (NEF)
